Atmosphere plays an important role in living mechanisms and human beings. In recent years the frequency of severe weather phenomena, like drought, flood and forest fires resulted in loss of life and property illustrating an increasing trend. Today, many sectors have been affected by atmospheric conditions, but none more than aviation which is developing all over the world. In Turkey, there are new and important improvements in aviation in parallel to economic growth. Similar improvements have been recorded in aviation meteorology.

The first symposium on atmospheric sciences was held in 1981. The second to sixth symposiums on atmospheric sciences, air pollution and climate changing were held in 1991, 2003, 2008, 2011 and 2013 respectively. These series of symposiums were intended to provide opportunity for interaction of scientists, engineers, planners, economists and other social scientists, agricultural scientists who are applying all topics in Atmospheric Sciences, Air Pollution, energy and Climate Changing in their research.  This symposium, ATMOS2015, is based on and, takes as its focus on atmospheric sciences/aviation covering various papers on aviation with resulting research discussed and shared with all participants. The main topic of ATMOS2015 has been selected as “aviation”. 7th Atmospheric Sciences Symposium has been organized by Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Department of Meteorology, with co-operation of Istanbul Aydın University; Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and Anadolu BIL Professional School of Higher Education. Invited Lecturers were presented by academicians from different universities abroad and Turkey (University of Delft, (The NETHERLAND), Institute of Atmospheric Physics, DLR, GERMANY,  National Centre for Atmospheric Research  /  University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), Boulder, CO , USA , Freie University,  Berlin, GERMANY, ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences School of Engineering / Centre for Aviation, SWITZERLAND,  Middle East Technical University, Institute of Marine Sciences, TURKEY, Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science ETH Zurich University (Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich: ETH Zurich University is the best institution at Europe. It is amongst the 8 top universities in science and technology in the world with 21 Nobel Prizes with Albert Einstein.), SWITZERLAND,  Turkish Water Foundation, TURKEY, Sharda University Greater Noida, NCR, INDIA, Freie University, Meteorology Institute, Technische Universität Braunschweig,  Institute of Fluid Mechanics, GERMANY, Paul Scherrer Institute, SWITZERLAND, Section of Applied Physics, Physics Department, University of Patras, GREECE, Atmospheric Modelling Section (ATMO), Department of Environmental Science Aarhus University, DENMARK).  All atmospheric and inter-disciplinary topics were discussed at the symposium. Selected papers were published in selected international journals.

The main goal of ATMOS2015 Symposium is to foster discussion in detail with different national and international institutions, universities, and organizations. It is also expected that some new policy statements for policy enforcement and legislators will be involved. A very important platform will be built up at the symposium. Participants from a background in theoretical or experimental fields have been invited. With collaboration and co-operation of politicians, scientists, academicians, and sectors, it was an exceptional meeting. ITU and IAU have secured the co-operation and collaboration of Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU), General Directorate of Turkish Air Lines (THY), Turkish State Meteorological Service (TSMS), General Directorate of Civil Aviation (SHGM), Marmara Regional Clean Air Directorate (MTHMBM), Turkish Chamber of Meteorological Engineers (TMMOB) and State Hydraulic Works (DSI). Important contributions in the field of each institution are expected at the end of this symposium.

Studies in Atmospheric Sciences provide avenues for proper understanding of real world problems on Atmospheric sciences, aviation, climate changing, air quality, urbanization, renewable energies, extreme weather events, early warning systems etc. Keeping in view importance of these topics Istanbul Technical University had organized the first National Symposium on all Atmospheric Sciences during 23-25 March, 1981. A good number of active researchers of the field participated in its deliberations, and the papers presented were published in the Proceeding of the Symposium. It was expected to have an opportunity to bring together national and foreign scientists who would present some new results in this field, share new technologies, computer programs, enlarging the scientific horizon, especially for young scientists. We are pleased to be with you in Istanbul in April, 2015 at this important Symposium and benefit from the high level presentations, focused debate, and exchange of information. Organizing committee would like to thank all participants and contributors. All presentations were of high quality. Analysis in Atmospheric Sciences has progressed rapidly and has exhibited its interdisciplinary role. Several significant applications of aviation, climate changing, meteorological studies, urbanization, air pollution, economical aspects were discussed during the symposium.

The seventh symposium organized by Istanbul Technical and Istanbul Aydın Universities during 28-30 April, 2015 with the co-operation of different organizations and institutions has been concluded successfully. The organizers would like to express their gratitude to the following institutions and organizations which provide plenty of opportunities to meet and finalize their periodic activities:  Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul Aydın University,  Ondokuz Mayıs University,  THY (Turkish Air Lines),  TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey),   (Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), DSI (General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works),   Gemi Social  Responsibility Agency,  TMMOB  (Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects: Chamber of Meteorological Engineers), Turkish Water Foundation, Mimar Sinan Engineering Unit, ENERIMET, BIGCEM, Ertürk Group,  Tetra, Automation ATLANTIS, Ennotes Engineering, METAR (ITU Meteorological Research Club).
